HANDMADE IS ABOUT LIVING MORE MINDFULLY ⋒

Environmentally Conscious Brand

Sunlit Folk is an Australian based business with a commitment to designing handmade creations that empower children and adults everywhere. Everything is lovingly designed by us and made to order under ethical, humane, and environmentally-conscious conditions.

Here at Sunlit Folk we are passionate about reducing our environmental footprint. With a background in environmental science, I am committed to keeping my footprint to a minimum, and supporting slow consumerism.

We are confident that as a collective we can make a difference ~ we believe it's important for individuals to make small, frequent actions to care for our Earth.

Ethics

Handmade is about living more mindfully ⋒

We consciously consider our ethical and environmental impact on the planet. We focus on designing, creating, and providing quality products for longevity and reuse.

None of our products are mass produced... their creation takes time, and they are lovingly hand-crafted. The entire Sunlit Folk collection is designed by me, and has taken many months to pull together.

As such, we do not engage in mass sales, or attempt to sell large quantities of stock. We are passionate about participating in a slower more sustainable market.

We would love for people to rediscover thoughtfulness & be intentional with their spending.

Let's bring back the idea that you buy something special, original and timeless to hand down to the next generation

Paints

Our wooden items are hand-painted using interactive acrylic paints that are non-toxic, and water-based.

We only use the Chroma Australia brand of paints (Atelier Interactive and Jo Sonja) as they are made right here in NSW Australia and owned by Jim Cobb who is also Australian. They are made to the highest standard of production, lightfastness, quality and ASTM Certification. Where possible, we like to support Australian businesses.

With regards to the copper paint used for some elements of our mini folk... This pigment type is Micaceous (or Mica). You may have heard of mica powder before as the mineral has been around forever. It’s a non-toxic, non-metallic mineral that gives off a shimmery and "metallic like" appearance. You can find mica powder in cosmetics, soaps and lotions as well as art supplies. Mica basically leaves a magical glow on whatever it's used on.

Paint Sealer ~ non-toxic.

We strive to utilise all left over paint and fabric where possible, so any left over product gets used in the next collection. Another reason why hand-crafted items are so unique and personal.

Felt and textiles

Indigo Inspirations hand dyed wool felt supplies are lovingly dyed in Mullumbimby, Northern NSW.  This wool felt is made of Pure New Wool, which is naturally nonflammable and dirt repellent. We use this felt to hand stitch all of our felt animals, ocean cove pieces and cottages.

Our Sunlit Folk journal covers are printed via sustainable textile colouration methods (digital pigment printing). A high-definition image of my original artwork has been printed onto quality organic canvas using water based inks. This method does not require water, and there is no waste ink during the printing process.

This organic textile has been grown in cotton farms where the use of pesticides has been banned. The beautiful canvas has all the features of a natural look with an oatmeal colour and speckled texture through the yarn.

Printing - cardstock

All of our business cards and swing tags are created using 'Collective Green Printing' which allows multiple customers to print together on the one press. By printing your materials side-by-side with others’, it saves you both time and money and most importantly, reduces the environmental impact of your printed materials even further, by reducing the amount of plates, paper, ink, energy and water required for each job. This process encourages the 'print on demand' method of production.

Our cards are printed with vegetable based inks on 100% post-consumer recycled paper stock.

Packaging

We strive to utilise earth friendly packaging, and we source our materials locally where possible.

Each of our mini folk come in a reusable cotton drawstring pouch. Our products are wrapped in tissue paper, and covered with a corrugated cardboard for extra protection where needed. Both of these paper items can be reused (they make great creative play resources for your little ones).

Australian orders are posted in 100% compostable and biodegradable mailers or cardboard boxes, and we encourage them to be reused or home composted by our customers.

We use Biodegradable tape and recycled paper wherever possible.

Thank you for supporting small ~
